1962 Big Tanker Corvette

Frank Dominianni is a true racer’s racer and was one of the most feared road racers of the East Coast circuit during the 1960’s. Frank opened his speed shop Hi-Speed & Power, in Valley Stream, New York in 1947. He began by building Soap Box racers and model airplanes, then advanced to homemade midget racers. During the 50’s and 60’s he raced everything including an Elva, Allards and then rounding out his career with his 1962 Corvette until 1971.

From the moment Frank took to the track, his competitors could see this driver commanded their respect with his foot to the floor stab and steer technique. He filled his shop with trophies and awards through the years.

In 1959 the New York Times dubbed Frank Dominianni, “One of the top three drivers whose spectacular performances made the B production class one of the most interesting of the road race season.”

This 1962 Corvette was purchased new by Frank Dominianni and clocked 11,000 miles on the odometer during its racing career. Rare and unusual racing options abound on this Corvette. It was ordered with features such as: RPO 276 Wide Wheels, RPO 488 24 Gallon Fuel Tank, RPO 582 360hp Fuel Injection & Hi Lift Cam, heavy duty brakes and steering and off road exhaust. Tearing up the tracks and driving this car to a new National Record, Frank ran against drivers the likes of Yenko, Donohue, Fitch and Dick Thompson.

In April of 1962, this report on Frank was given at Virginia
International Raceway in the race results: “To everyone’s surprise the Corvettes stayed in the reasonable vicinity of the track with the notable exception of Francis Dominianni who left the track innumerable times, led a parade of 3 Corvettes through station G,

neatly spun in front of the Scarab at the Oak Tree and was leaving a stench around the track that several watering eyes identified as nitro. Don Yenko’s old Corvette walked away with BP and Don took the first N.C. Challenge Cup home with him.”

Preserved in all of its period racing finery, this
historic Corvette ia an awesome site for years to come.
